Is she too cute, make one for your bobbin lacing friends who probably can’t tat…Hedgehogs are the mascot of bobbin lacers (they look like pin cushions) the hedgehogs, not the bobbin lacers. The tatter’s mascot is a box of fine chocolates!

Tatted hedgehogs

October 1998

Materials:

  • 4-1/4 yards Pearl Cotton Thread (size5)
  • #3 (large) Tatting Needle
  • Wire Needle Threader
  • Twisted-wire Beading Needle or Bee’s Wax
  • All-purpose Silicone Adhesive (for eyes)
  • Sharp-pointed Scissors
  • 3 ea Brown-colored Beads (sz 11)
  • 2 ea Movable eyes (3mm)
  • Crochet Hook (for joining)

Instructions:

Wind off 27″ of thread from the ball for the needle, but do not cut.String on 3 beads with beading needle or stiffen end of thread with bee’s wax. Thread tatting needle, leaving about a 4 inch tail. Begin 1st ring with needle thread. Beads must be on the needle thread (between the first double stitch and 4 inch tail). all chains are made with the ball thread and will require about 3 1/2 yards of thread.

Head:

R 2, -4, beads [for nose], 4, -2, cl R, rw.

Body:

  1. ch 2, -1, -1, -1, +(lock join to closest picot) rw. (R to L) cross threads and knot.
  2. Ch 1, (-1) x7, 1,+, rw, cross threads and knot.
  3. Ch 1,(-1) x 14, 1 +, rw, cross threads and knot.
  4. Ch 2,(-1) x 19, 2, +, rw, cross threads and knot.
  5. Ch 2, (-1) x 26, 2,+.

Each chain is drawn up snugly behind the previous chain, and begins to formulate a stair-stepped pattern from the back (see picture). Picots are about 1/2 inch, but do not need to be sized perfectly. After each chain is completed, slipped off the needle and joined to the closest picot, the work is then reversed, left to right, and the threads are crossed(Christian Fish symbol appears) and ready to knot (shoelace style) The two “head” picots are the only picots used for joining all chains and are utilize more then once and will stretch slightly into ears. make sure your chain is tightened and positioned where you want it to stay BEFORE making the lock join. Lock joins are initiated with the needle thread (core thread) and will not move once tightened.

When last chain is completed, weave in thread ends. Place a drip of adhesive in front of the two joining picots, position and press on eyes and let dry.
