Tatting

Even as a child I was fascinated by the negative space created by the branches of winter trees. As I grew up I learned to crochet. I have done all kinds of crochet from wooly afghans to Irish Crochet. I was quite content with my crochet, until my Mom wanted to learn to Tat.

I drove her to lessons and sat in the classes. The classes were awful. Too many students per teacher. And the teacher assumed we would catch on quickly. My poor mother never learned to tat, but I did.

For a long time I tatted alone. I didn’t know anyone who tatted.  Then came the internet, came Prodigy, came fellow tatters. The first thing I looked for was tatting. I found to my wonder that there were a lot of tatters on Prodigy. Oh Boy, I was in hog heaven.

When we moved to AOL I had a chance to set up a website. I have had a tatting website for over 5 years. There have been many changes in the format, but the content has continued to be about tatting and tatters.

This is a bone tatting shuttle from India, the handkerchief is one I made for my mother. She wouldn’t use it, as it was “to good.”
